A Journey of Self-Discovery Through Meditation

As a Mom, I know the feeling of guilt that can come along with leaving home for any length of time. You want to be there for your kids, and being away from them can feel like an impossible decision. But sometimes you have to leave home in order to recharge and come back stronger. This week, I'm heading out on a 10-day silent meditation retreat known as Vipassana, and while I'm already missing my family, I know it is a decision that will ultimately benefit us all. This retreat will be a journey of self-discovery and an opportunity for me to deepen my understanding and practice of meditation. And it is important for my kids to see their mother turning toward herself in a way that leads to greater Love and kindness toward herself and others.



The Benefits of Silence

The practice of silence is a powerful tool for personal growth, self-reflection, and transformation. During the 10 days at the Vipassana retreat, I will be surrendering to the stillness of silence in order to connect deeply with myself and gain clarity on what matters most in life. Silence allows us to go inward, quiet our minds, connect with our true selves, unplug from distractions, and cultivate presence.


By observing silence during these 10 days, I can observe my thoughts without judgment or attachment. Through this process, we can begin to distinguish between our conditioned thinking patterns vs our truth and wisdom that lies within us. We can also become aware of how we respond or react when faced with difficult emotions or challenging situations rather than running away from them or acting out unconsciously as we would normally do in day-to-day life.


The Benefits For My Kids

I believe it is essential for children to witness their parent’s commitment towards self-care practices such as meditation because it teaches them the value of taking care of oneself first before taking care of others – something that can be easily forgotten in our busy lives. When kids witness their parents taking care of themselves through mindful practices like meditation, they understand that it’s ok (and necessary) to take time away from all the “doing” and spend some time alone with themselves - whether it’s going on a silent retreat or simply sitting down each morning for 15 minutes in stillness & solitude before starting their day. Seeing their mother invest her time into her own personal development will show my kids how important it is to nourish one’s body, mind & soul - something that will serve them throughout their lives!



Taking time away from our everyday lives is not always easy, and yet it is often necessary for us to come back recharged & inspired so we can better take care of ourselves & those around us. I am excited yet nervous about beginning this journey by attending Vipassana and look forward to what insights & learnings lie ahead! Although temporarily apart from my family while on this retreat, I am confident they will benefit greatly from seeing me make an intentional effort towards my own personal growth, which in turn will help bring more Love, peace and joy into our home.
